Short answer: After Class 12 you can train for aviation careers that do not need a pilot licence: airline and airport customer service, ground handling (ramp, baggage and cargo), airport operations, air ticketing and travel, and hospitality. Courses range from short certificates to diplomas and degrees. Choose one that teaches practical skills employers use, is honest about placement, and gives you more than one career path. India's airport network grew from 74 airports in 2014 to 163 in 2025, according to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), and every one of them needs trained ground teams.

What jobs are there at an airport?
Most aviation jobs are on the ground, not in the cockpit or the cabin. The main groups are:
| Area | Typical roles | Who usually hires |
|---|---|---|
| Airline customer service | Check in, boarding gate, ticketing, lounge, baggage enquiries | Airlines and ground handling companies |
| Ground handling | Ramp, baggage, aircraft loading, ground support equipment | Ground handling companies and airlines |
| Cargo | Cargo acceptance, documentation, warehouse | Airlines, cargo handlers, logistics companies |
| Airport operations | Terminal operations, passenger facilitation, help desks | Airport operators |
| Travel and tourism | Air ticketing, tour operations, visa and travel desks | Travel companies and agencies |
| Hospitality | Front office, food and beverage, guest relations | Hotels, lounges, airline catering |
Aviation security screening is a separate track. Screeners need certification from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), which includes the Basic AVSEC course and a BCAS screener test, and some employers ask for a graduate degree. A general aviation course does not give you that certification, so check the employer's notice if security is the role you want.
Why demand for ground staff is growing
- More airports. PIB reports 163 operational airports in 2025, up from 74 in 2014, with a vision of 350 to 400 by 2047.
- More passengers. DGCA data shows domestic airlines carried about 16.69 crore passengers in 2025.
- Regional routes. The Ministry of Civil Aviation says more than 159 lakh passengers have flown on routes under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme.
- Long term projection. PIB projects 25 million jobs linked to aviation by 2047. That is a long range government projection, not a promise of jobs in any one year.
Air travel also moves in cycles. DGCA data shows domestic traffic for January to August 2026 was flat compared with the same months of 2025. That is a good reason to pick a course that keeps your options open across aviation, travel and hospitality. Our overview of the aviation industry in India has the wider picture.
Types of aviation courses after 12th
- Short certificate courses of a few months in airport ground staff work, customer service, ticketing or cargo basics.
- Diplomas of around a year that combine aviation, hospitality and travel, often with grooming and communication training.
- Skill council aligned courses built on national skill standards published by the Aerospace and Aviation Sector Skill Council (AASSC). See the table below.
- Degree programmes in aviation, hospitality or tourism management from universities, for a longer route into supervisory roles.
AASSC's course list includes these ground and service roles. The hours are the course length AASSC lists, and the NSQF level shows where the skill sits on India's national qualifications framework.
| AASSC course | Hours | NSQF level |

Aviation course fees: what to ask
Fees vary widely by institute, city and course length, so we do not quote a single figure. Before you pay, ask for a written fee schedule that shows the tuition fee and instalments, uniform and study material charges, exam or certification fees and who issues the certificate, any placement support charges, GST, and the refund policy if you leave early or get a job offer before the course ends. Compare what each fee includes, not just the total.
How to choose an aviation institute
- Ask for proof of placement. Ask for names of recent students and where they joined, and, with their consent, speak to one or two. Be wary of any institute that promises a job, because the employer decides who it hires.
- Check the trainers' background in airlines, airports, travel or hotels.
- Look at practical training: mock check in counters, ticketing software practice and airport visits.
- Check recognition claims. If the course claims a skill council or university link, ask for the document and the exact course name.
- Get a written fee schedule covering the points listed above.
- Read two or three current job notices from airlines or ground handling companies first, so you know what they ask for before you pay for any course.
Aviation training in Gujarat
Students in Gujarat can now train close to home. Ahmedabad's airport handled about 1.38 crore passengers in FY 2025 to 26, according to official figures reported by DeshGujarat. As one example, Aerostar Aviation Academy, founded by Dr. Sheetal Jadeja, has centres in Ahmedabad (Maninagar and Chandkheda), Vadodara, Rajkot and Surat. Its courses include ground staff and travel management, cabin crew and hospitality management, and aviation, hospitality and travel management. Aerostar is a client of The Franchise Insiider: we run its franchise enquiries.
For education entrepreneurs
Ground staff, travel and hospitality training is a large part of what aviation academies teach, and it needs classrooms, a mock counter and trained faculty rather than aircraft. Some academies grow through franchise centres. If you run an institute or plan one, check these points before you sign:
- which courses you may run, and who issues the certificate
- how the brand trains and audits faculty
- what the brand does for student enquiries and interview preparation
- the territory, fees and exit terms in the agreement, reviewed by your own lawyer. The Franchise Insiider is not a law firm.
Read our guide to the education franchise in India, the steps in how to buy a franchise in India, and the Aerostar franchise page. Yes, The Franchise Insiider charges brands, and brands pay us. That is how franchising works everywhere. With 300+ franchises awarded, our job on each enquiry is to check fit before anyone signs.

FAQs
Which aviation course is good after 12th?
It depends on the role you want. Airport ground staff and customer service courses suit people who enjoy working with passengers. Cabin crew courses suit those who want to work on board. Travel and hospitality courses widen your options. Pilot training needs Physics and Mathematics in Class 12 and a DGCA licence.
Can I work at an airport after 12th?
Yes. Many airline customer service, ground handling and airport operations roles hire after Class 12, usually with employer training. A ground staff course can help you prepare for selection, but the employer decides who it hires.
What is the qualification for airport ground staff?
Most entry level ground staff roles ask for Class 12, good spoken English and communication, and a presentable manner. Each airline or ground handling company sets its own criteria, so check the current job notice.
Is a ground staff course compulsory?
No. Employers train new staff on their own processes. A course can help you understand airport work, practise interviews and compare roles before you apply.
Are aviation jobs growing in India?
Over the past decade, yes: PIB reports airports grew from 74 in 2014 to 163 in 2025. Hiring still goes in cycles, and DGCA data shows domestic air traffic for January to August 2026 was flat compared with 2025.
How long is an aviation course after 12th?
It depends on the type. Short certificates run for a few months, diplomas for around a year and degrees for three years or more. AASSC lists its ground and service role courses at 420 to 570 hours, so ask each institute how many hours of classroom and practical training you get.
